If you decide to live in a single dorm room, recreating your comfort zone can be much easier. Though every dorm is small spaced, you have the power to work with bold colors and edgy fabrics to help create your dorm room since you cannot color your walls.

Common flooring in dorm rooms are linoleum or tile, which can be a bit cold for feet during the winter. Choosing a big modern rug that is large enough to cover both under the bed to the desk area would help resolve the issue. Those who worry about staining the rugs with drinks or food, buying a dark-colored rug can hide all the accidents when on the run. Make sure to pick easy-wash rugs like cotton or synthetic polyester. Rugs are always easy to clean because you can take it out and give it a couple of shakes, all without having to vacuum!

Having a large mirror for your dorm is a must. Most students have to share a bathroom with each other, and it may be hard to get access to a mirror. Buying a big mirror will cut down the time of waiting for a mirror and get you where you need to go faster. Consider buying a small basin and water jug, if you wish to brush your teeth in privacy once in a while.

Buying a desk lamp and a lamp for your nightstand will create the aura of home. When you add photos of family and friends and put them on your walls and desk, it helps create a comfortable space of memories.

Though it is difficult to be away from home where your family and friends are, creating your dorm room as a home away from home is a good way to make yourself at home in your college. Creating your comfortable dorm will help lessen your separation anxiety and encourage you to feel at home in your new dorm.

Helping Your Teen Move Out

Moving out of the house for the first time can be one of the most conflicting times of your teenager's life. They will most certainly be excited for their new freedom and independence, but many will also feel anxious, apprehensive, and saddened by the move away from home. You might be feeling similar mixed emotions as the parent. On the one hand, you are proud of your child for moving on to bigger goals and greater obstacles, but it is also saddening and difficult to let go. Do not be afraid to show them your conflicting feelings. It is important to communicate your feelings and help them understand their freedom to do the same. There are many ways your teen for the journey they are about to embark on.

Spend a great deal of time helping your teenager plan their move. While it does provide furniture, dormitory living does require many purchases and preparations. Most dorm beds are longer than standard twin beds, so special sheets need to be purchased. Additionally, your child will need towels, a hamper, detergent, shower products, decorations, and school supplies. Don't take charge of the planning and packing, but do guide them and offer your support. Help them contact their school for a list of recommended items to be brought along, and make plenty of suggestions.

It is important to remind your child that their home will still be home, even if they are living somewhere else. Store some of their things at home-don't bring everything to school. Also, don't change their bedroom immediately after their departure. Doing so is often very hurtful, even if they don't admit to it.

Make sure to keep lines of communication open, and always be available on the phone or through email.
When dropping your teenager off at school, only stay for as long as it takes to get them settled and unpacked. Sticking around for too long, buying too many things after arriving, and continuing to take your child out for dinner will only contribute to the stress that is felt with transitioning to college life. Even though it will be difficult, it is important to say goodbye as quickly as possible. Your child will need time to adjust, meet new people, and participate in orientation and other scheduled activities. Your presence will, unfortunately, only be a hindrance after the first few hours.

Mail will always be appreciated, so send your child a care package as soon as you get home from dropping them off! Fill it with homemade food, photos of your family, quarters for laundry, a letter, or their favorite candy! Anything that shows your thoughts are with them will be a great help.

The most popular bunk beds on the market are the twin over twin bunks, the full over full bunks and the twin over full bunks. Many of the twin-over-twin bunks can be used side by side as normal twin beds. A twin over full bunk bed has a single bed as the top bunk and a full-width, double bed as the lower bunk. Another popular option is the futon bunk, many of which are made along the lines of the twin-over-full bunk bed. In my own opinion, this is a lovely option for children to have the option of using the bottom bunk as a sofa during the daytime.

A far more recent innovation is the sofa that, with a few twists and turns, can be quickly turned into a set of bunk beds. In terms of being excellent space saving bunk beds, this convertible couch is great. To cut a long story short, the back of this sofa converts into the upper bunk while the sofa seat converts into the lower bunk. Brilliant though this idea is [and it is very clever], it is hoped that, eventually, the price will come down a bit - rather a lot, actually, because this is certainly not a cheap option. It's good, and full fills all the options required of space saving bunk beds, until you come to the price. The last time I looked, this little number retailed at a cool ,800.00!

Living on a College Campus

One of the first questions that comes up after cost and location on any college search is where will I live? About 80% of four-year colleges offer some type of on campus housing. Many colleges strongly suggest (some may even require) that you live on campus for the first year. And other rules may apply too, like whether you can have a vehicle your first year. Of course there are some downsides to dorm living. You need to learn how to get along, share things like bathrooms, common areas, and other resources. Privacy is difficult to find, roommates may not be a perfect match, and distractions are everywhere. But for most new students, the good things outweigh the bad in the long run.

On campus living can come in many shapes and sizes. Each school may have slightly different facilities but all fall into some general categories. And all have rules; in fact each type of dorm may have different rules due to the nature of the dorm. Some colleges cater to certain groups like international students and make special facilities and rules to fit.

Some common dorm types are single sex (male or female only), coed dorms (where both sexes may be allowed in many configurations), dorms for special needs students (more wheel chair friendly), and even type of majors (like all music or engineering majors), lifestyle (drinking, smoking, whatever), and student level (freshman, sophomore or above).

Dorm rooms come in all shapes and configurations. The two roommate models are the most common. But you also have single occupant, quad occupants, and everything in between. Cost is a factor in many of the layouts with the single being the most expensive. Bathrooms are almost always shared either between two or maybe even the whole floor.

Speaking of cost, each school can vary widely in cost. On the high end it can be around ,000 per semester, on the low end it can be around 00 per semester. Single occupant dorm rooms are the most expensive and the cost goes down with the number of occupants in the room. The age and special features of each dorm facility can have an impact on the cost too.

A big part of your first year of college is directly related to where you live. Don't forget to check out any requirements and what facilities are available. If possible, try and visit the campus while school is in session. Take a look at the dorm rooms, talk to students, and get a feel for where you will be living.

If you have two teen boys in your home, chances are you probably separate them a lot because they argue over territory in the bedroom. Most of them contain a twin-sized bed on a top bunk and then underneath the bed is a place to put a desk, television, and a recliner. This gives them their own individualized space. Place area rugs at the area underneath the bed, each one being a different color, for example orange rugs and white rugs on one side; brown rugs and blue rugs on the other.

Closet

A closet for each teen would be ideal however, if space will not allow it then try to arrange their room so that each one has a corner to place a dresser. You can purchase an adjustable closet rod that will hold a certain amount of weight. You can extend it from the side of the dresser to the wall. This can be used for things that must hang up and everything else can go in the drawers. If they have too many clothes to fit in a dress, which most of the time teens do, you can give them a storage box to place everything else and they can keep it in the attic or basement.

Sitting Area

You can place a sofa, coffee table, and television in the middle of the floor so they can both share the same sitting area in the bedroom. If the room is small, try placing two recliners instead of a sofa or you can use beanbag chairs. You just need a place for them to sit down and watch television.

Accessorize

You can accessorize with neutral colors. Throw pillows, curtains, and lampshades are just some of the accessories that you can add to complete the look. If they don't have a desk under their dorm beds, place a desk somewhere in the room so they do have the opportunity to sit at the desk to do work, study, or just read a book.

Searching for a great bunk bed for your child can be confusing. I'm sure you have many reservations about bunk beds. Are they safe? Is your child old enough? What should you look for in a bunk bed? Hopefully you will find some answers in this article.

Question 1; Are bunk beds safe?

Bunk beds are safer now than ever. Better materials, better construction, and better design have all factored into a much safer bed than even a decade ago. Most bed bunk accidents are a result of horseplay, in fact, most injuries are from teenagers jumping around on the beds, especially college dorm lofts and bunk beds. As long as safe practices are observed, your child should be fine. Teach them to never jump on the top bunk and how to use the ladder correctly.

Guard rails on bunk beds are regulated by the government now and must conform to certain specifications. There can be no more than 5 inches between the top of the mattress and the bottom of the guardrail. This ensures your child will not slip through.

Another safety practice you should look for is the use of a Bunkie board. This will keep the mattress secured in place and not allow it to shift which might result in gaps. These gaps or unforeseen openings can cause the mattress to slip. A Bunkie board will keep the mattress securely in place.

Question 2: Is my child old enough to sleep on the top bunk?

Most experts have agreed that your child should be at least six years old before sleeping on the top bunk. But who are these experts and why are they qualified to arrive at such a conclusion? Nobody really knows who the exact people are but studies have shown that most children have achieved a certain maturity by age six. But only you can determine if your child is ready or not.
