Students who choose to reside on campus while completing their Bachelor's degrees must come equipped with all the necessities they need to live comfortably at college. Of course, dorm living requires some compromises and far as what items can be reasonably squeezed into a small room shared by multiple people. You'll need the basics, such as a mini fridge, computer, an area rug if the room is not carpeted, and bedding. There may also be some items you and your future roommates have not thought of that can make life in a dorm a little easier.
Bring a dry erase board of decent size. There are countless uses for one of these, from working out homework problems to leaving notes for a roommate. You can use a dry erase board to jot down ideas when brainstorming a paper, or to write down your schedule in plain view to avoid overlooking a commitment. These are inexpensive and easily placed above a desk or on the back of a door.
Dorm Bedding
Be creative about storage. Bring a variety of storage units of different sizes to squeeze under the bed, hang on the back of the door, or divide dresser drawers. Look for slender storage units that can be fitted between your desk and the bed, for example. A fabric shoe organizer can be hung from the wall and used to hold a variety of objects from glasses and mugs to office supplies, in addition to shoes, of course. Some organizers can hang from clothes hangers in your closet.
Depending on whether your dorm is air conditioned or whether it is located in a damp or musty building, you may want to bring a fan and an air purifier. Arrange with your roommates that only one of you will bring each item. You may be glad to have these for the room.
A first aid kit is always a good idea to have on hand for minor injuries. Of course, you should visit the college nurse for anything potentially serious, but you will want to have a bandage or a pair of tweezers available for paper cuts and splinters, as well as some over-the-counter painkillers for headaches, etc.
Be prepared for the public showers, as well. For your health, you shouldn't share soaps and razors with other students, especially since the showers you use regularly are likely used by an entire dorm floor. A plastic shower caddy can be filled with your necessities and transported easily from your room and back when you shower. You will likely want shower flip-flops as well.
A small clothesline that you can temporarily hang in your room is a great idea for wet towels or delicate clothing that you cannot throw in the dryer. You could also bring a clothes rack instead, as long as it is relatively small and portable. You'll be glad you thought of it!
